Fans have praised referee Daniele Orsato for a 'brilliant decision' during Borussia Dortmund's Champions League semi-final win against PSG - but Rio Ferdinand doesn't agree.

Orsato initially awarded a penalty to PSG after Mats Hummels' challenge on Ousmane Dembele on the edge of the area 65 minutes into the match.

The initial contact with Dembele's left foot appeared to be just outside the area, but he fell into it, and Ferdinand felt it was a penalty.

However, the Italian changed his mind within a couple of seconds and awarded a free-kick instead, with fans praising his hawk-like eye and quick decision-making.

A throng of PSG players immediately surrounded him to protest the switch but Orsato stood by his call.

Dortmund were leading 1-0 in the match after a Mats Hummels header and were up 2-0 on aggregate, a scoreline they eventually won by. VAR confirmed that Orsato's decision was correct.

Ferdinand led the criticism on TNT Sports, saying: 'This is a penalty. His left toe is on the line. That’s a pen. The left foot is on the line where the contact is made, come on man. That’s why they have VAR.'

However, he did not find himself so well supported in the social media town hall.

'Brilliant decision from the referee,' one fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

'That’s a TOP decision from the referee. Let’s be real here. That’s class,' said another.

'What a decision from the referee. Wow,' another commented.

'Wow that was a quick change of heart from the referee in the CL semi, but at least he’s got the decision correct,' one said.

Another used it as a chance to slam English officials, writing: 'What. A. Decision. Shame English referees would now spend 5 minutes checking VAR for that decision.

'Why can’t every ref be like this? Every single time I see this man referee a match he’s spot on with almost every decision,' one said.

Dortmund came into the tie in Paris with a 1-0 advantage thanks to a Niclas Fullkrug goal in the first leg.

PSG had many chances across both legs to score, hitting the post and bar multiple times, and wondered if Warren Zaire-Emery would regret missing an open goal just three minutes before Hummels' goal.

The French champions had 30 shots and 70 percent of the ball on Thursday night but couldn't find the back of the net.

Kylian Mbappe looked exasperated at full-time after once again falling short ahead of his move to Real Madrid in the summer.

For Dortmund, it is the first Champions League final since 2013, when they lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich, and this year could well see a repeat of that depending on how their rivals get on in Madrid on Wednesday night.

It is all the more remarkable considering that they are fifth in the Bundesliga, 24 points off Bayer Leverkusen.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND pulled off a superb Champions League upset to reach the final for the first time in 11 years.

They will be back at Wembley on Saturday 1 June, where they lost to Bayern Munich in 2013, after downing Paris Saint-Germain.

It ruined Kylian Mbappe’s farewell in France as Jadon Sancho outshone the French superstar again.

Manchester United fans watching on will have felt further humiliation after Monday’s mauling at Crystal Palace watching Sancho cruise into a Champions League final.

Mats Hummels headed home the only goal as Edin Terzic’s side built on the hard-fought first-leg win to dump PSG out and extend their long wait for European success by at least another year.

PSG boss Luis Enrique had revved up the home support while the French press assumed a comeback would be straightforward.

Their ultras in the Virage Auteuil unveiled an elaborate banner ahead of kick-off, depicting a team bus smashing through Dortmund’s Yellow Wall above the message: “We are the army of PSG and nothing can stop us.”

It turns out the fifth-best team in the Bundesliga is all it takes.

The end-to-end theme from the first leg was picked up here, with Mbappe, Karim Adeyemi and then Goncalo Ramos having had their half-chances before Julian Ryerson found the side-netting.

Neither PSG nor Dortmund could quite get a grasp on the action, Ousmane Dembele – who missed a sitter six days earlier – blasted high and wide from close range before Adeyemi drew a fine stop from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Aside from his volley and a couple of moments of flash footwork, Mbappe had been on the fringes, isolated on the left.

Having been upstaged by Sancho a week ago, many expected the Real Madrid-bound sensation to set the record straight in his home city – but the Englishman was more eye-catching once again.

This was Mbappe’s most important game in seven years at Parc des Princes, a final chance to get a shot at cementing his legacy with a Champions League title before the expected move to La Liga this summer and it fell flat.

There is still a French Cup final against Lyon to be won, but this was the big one.

After a flat first half, PSG had looked to be getting things going in the right direction.

Achraf Hakimi quickly won a corner from which wunderkind Warren Zaire-Emery somehow hit the post with the goal at his mercy from five yards.

Any hope from that quick restart was sucked out of this corner of Paris in 50 minutes.

Marquinhos played an unfortunate back-pass out for a corner and the visitors struck.

Hummels – the only survivor in last night’s starting XI from the 2013 final – was left completely unmarked to meet Julian Brandt’s corner at the far post and head in under Donnarumma.

Terzic quickly sent on veteran Marco Reus, who also played at Wembley 11 years ago, to help see them through before Sule later replaced Sancho.

Just as in the first leg, PSG started to pile up the chances but could not take them.

Ramos twice fired over the bar on either side of

An irritable Ronnie O'Sullivan clashed with referee Desislava Bozhilova before crashing out of the World Snooker Championship at the quarter-final stage.

The Rocket was beaten 13-10 by Stuart Bingham as his hopes of winning a record eighth Crucible title went up in smoke.

But there was a flashpoint in the 21st frame when play was interrupted by spectators watching the adjacent match between Kyren Wilson and John Higgins returning to their seats.

O'Sullivan was about to take a shot when he was distracted by the noise and movement across the auditorium and he opted to sit down until the crowd settled.

Bozhilova attempted to prevent anyone else from entering the arena with the other match at the mid-session interval but wasn't successful.

She said: 'They're not going to let anybody in. They're all sat down now. We might be waiting 20 minutes, you know what I mean?'

When O'Sullivan finally returned to the table, he told the Bulgarian referee to 'just chill' before potting a long red.

However, it wasn't the prelude to a victory as Bingham pulled away to win that frame and the next two.

Earlier, O'Sullivan claimed 'the referees have got it in for me' after a contentious moment over a rolling black.

In the 12th frame, O'Sullivan potted the black for 29, with Bingham on 43. However, when Bozhilova re-spotted the black, it obstructed his shot at the next red by rolling slightly closer to the cue ball.

In a show of good sportsmanship, O'Sullivan offered Bingham the chance to look closely at the situation.

After the black's position was adjusted slightly, he could have potentially potted the red but instead, O'Sullivan decided to play a safety shot. Bingham ultimately won the frame.

During the break between sessions, O'Sullivan hit out at Bozhilova in an interview on Eurosport.

'It's just a normal day for me, a bit of snooker, a bit of food, chill out, went to the gym this morning, nice day,' he said.

'To be honest with you some of the referees have got it in for me. I just wanted to prove to her that she had got it wrong.

'Then I thought I didn't feel good about having to pot the ball after that but I just wanted to make a point. The point was made.

'I'm not that hungry to win in that way, I'm more of a principled person.'

The Crucible semi-finals will see Wilson take on David Gilbert and Bingham play Jak Jones, with the two best-of-33 matches underway on Thursday.

After his defeat, O'Sullivan said his 'arm was twisted' to come and compete at the Crucible this year.

'I wasn't going to be playing in this one until a new sponsor came along and said [you need to play in it],' he said.

'I wasn't going to play Manchester or this because of how I was feeling about playing. So they twisted my arm.

Snooker star Stephen Maguire appeared to eat something off the baize during his quarter-final match against David Gilbert.

The bizarre incident happened in the 19th frame with the Scotsman trailing his rival by 11-8 at the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible in Sheffield.

Maguire looked at the table after playing a shot and seemed to pick something off it, before proceeding to eat it and carrying on with the match seemingly unperturbed.

And the Glaswegian subsequently revealed he'd eaten a fly.

'It was just a fly. I spat it out when nobody was looking,' he told Metro Sport.

The strange interlude did not help his quest to reach the semi-final of the world championship as he crashed out 13-8 against Gilbert, who will face either Kyren Wilson or John Higgins in the semi-finals.

It is not the first time in this tournament that Maguire has made the headlines for his behavior at the baize.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Scotsman punched the table after playing a poor positional shot against Gilbert.

As he moved around the table looking to work out his next shot, Maguire punched the baize in frustration before walking back to his chair.

'He can't disguise his annoyance, his anger,' said Eurosport commentator Phil Yates.

'Why does he do it? One of these days he'll regret it in a major way. Yes, show frustration, but not like that.

'I like Maguire's passion, I just don't want to see him hurt himself.'

STAX Soulsville U.S.A. Trailer HD - Documentary series - Story of an underdog, interracial record label that ushered in the groundbreaking music of Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, The Staple Singers, Sam & Dave and many others - Plot synopsis: By 1973, Stax Records was one of the recording industry’s most influential producers of soul music, breaking acts such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Sam & Dave, and many more. In just under two decades, the scrappy outsider had grown from a modest family-owned record store and studio in Memphis, TN to a trailblazing global music label. STAX: SOULSVILLE U.S.A. chronicles the audacious group of individuals who dared to make music on their own terms, smashing racial barriers and defining an era and leaving an enduring musical legacy in their wake. Driven by a striking collection of restored and remastered archival performance footage and intimate interviews with key players in the label’s remarkable history, STAX: SOULSVILLE U.S.A. details the unlikely origin story of Stax Records and pays tribute to its complex music library and the legendary artists that emerged from the iconic studio.

Founded in 1957 by Jim Stewart and co-owned with his sister, Estelle Axton, the company drew upon a mix of young, local talent – musicians, songwriters, and producers – who would create the unforgettable Stax sound. Against the backdrop of the American south of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, white and Black artists worked together, defying segregation, and producing hits such as “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay,” “Soul Man,” “Green Onions,” and the Oscar®-winning “Theme from Shaft.” At the peak of its success, Stax artists commemorated the Watts Rebellion by playing to over 100,000 African Americans at the 1972 benefit concert Wattstax. During an era of major social turbulence, systemic inequity, and racial tensions, Stax, an integrated company, saw stunning artistic and cultural success, and managed to rebound from repeated business setbacks and tragic losses before the studio ultimately dissolved after fifteen pioneering years.

STAX: Soulsville, U.S.A.Releases on HBO and Streams on MAX on May 20 & 21st 2024

Directed by Jamila Wignot
Produced by Jamila Wignot and Kara Elverson
Executive Produced by Ezra Edelman, Caroline Waterlow, Nigel Sinclair, Nicholas Ferrall, Scott Pascucci, Sophia Dilley, Michele Smith, Jody Gerson, David Blackman, Charlie Cohen, and Ron Broitman
Featuring Otis Redding, Estelle Axton, Al Bell, Steve Cropper, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. RONNIE O’SULLIVAN was booted out of the World Snooker Championship by Stuart Bingham – but then revealed he considered not competing in the tournament.

And the Rocket reckons some referees “have got it in for me” as his quest for Crucible No.8 rolls over until next year.

Bingham, the 2015 world champion, progressed to the semi-finals following a stunning 13-10 victory and celebrated with a glass of red wine.

Yet seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, 48, said he only attended after being persuaded to do so by a new sponsor.

O’Sullivan, who PUNCHED the table in anger after one poor shot, said: “I wasn’t going to play the Tour Championship in Manchester or this because of how I was feeling about playing.

“They sort of twisted my arm. It’s first come, first served. I have signed up for 8-9 events next year.

“There are only so many days I allow myself to be away from home. You cannot do it all.

“I would have done (punditry) days with Eurosport here. They’ve been pretty good with me. I wanted to fulfill that.

“There are so many things to do in my life, man. I have such a busy, good life.

“Probably done painting with Damien Hirst, ate good food, taken the dogs out, seen my children, gone to Champney’s Spa.

“It might sound boring to you but it’s bloody exciting to me.”

O’Sullivan was praised in frame 12 by former world champion Neil Robertson for “the greatest bit of sportsmanship I’ve ever seen” after he turned down a chance to pot a red.

Trailing by 14 points, it appeared he was unsure whether the black -which referee Desislava Bozhilova has just respotted - was lying correcting on its spot, thus making the red pottable.

Rather than pot the red, O'Sullivan opted to instead play a safety shot after more than four-and-a-half minutes of deliberation – as the black ball was respotted about 10 times.

Australian cueist Robbo, working for the BBC praised O’Sullivan for telling ref Bozhilova she had not placed the black back accurately and was giving him an unfair advantage.

O'Sullivan went on to lose the frame.

But O’Sullivan admitted: “To be honest with you, some of the referees I think they’ve got it in for me.

“So I just wanted to prove to her that she’d got it wrong.

“I didn’t feel good about having to pot the ball after that. But I just wanted to make a point.

“I’m not that hungry to win in that way. I’m more of a principled person, so once the principle’s been made I can sleep at night.”

The World Snooker Tour refutes those allegations and insists the referee acted correctly and appropriately.

Bingham, who hit a 104 in the penultimate frame, cried backstage as he edged closer to a second world title – and now faces qualifier Jak Jones over four sessions across three days.
