Description: Artist’s animation showing one of the possible explanations as to how planet Halla managed to avoid getting swallowed by its host star Baekdu. In this scenario, Baekdu may have originally been part of a binary system comprising a red giant star and a white dwarf star. The two stars then merged, which would have prevented the red giant from expanding large enough to engulf Halla. Credit: W. M.
